THE LOUISIANA CATAHOULA LEOPARD STOCK DOGS COME TO A CANADIAN RANCH: RANCH O COLOR The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog, like most stock dogs have a born-in natural instinct to herd livestock. The Catahoulas have long been popular in the Southern United States for herding cattle. Catahoulas are known for their "unique glass eyes", a pale translucent whitish-blue eye. The Catahoulas are very popular in their home state of Louisiana and the Southern States. They are a rare commodity anywhere else, especially Western Canada. This versatile breed has also been used in search and rescue, drug detection, and companions for the handicap. Then it comes to herding cattle, sheep, or hogs, they are called the Four Footed Hired Hand! The Catahoula is a medium to tall dog with a broad chest, strong legs, and a wide skull. Weighing between 50-95 pounds, slick short hair, and are mottled-colored. Their unusual characteristics is, they have somewhat webbed feet, giving them good traction in snow or mud. They have an ability to adapt to any climate, and live comfortably. The Ranch O Color have top bloodlines from the Southern States. These Four Wheeling-Cattle Driving, Hunting Concerns are GREAT with children, giving them rides on snow sliders, and are happy to be around the children. They know when they are working and when they are having fun. "Ole Yeller" on Disney's movie is a solid Catahoula, also "Chance" on Disney's "Homeward Bound" is a Catahoula Cross. The Versatile Catahoula is just as the name says, Stock Dogs, Playmates, not to mention Guard Dogs.

Louisana Catahoula Leopard Dogs History: The Catahoula originated in the 1500's, when Hernando de Soto came from Spain and brought the Spanish Mastiff to help him overtake the Native Americans. When de Soto left, he left behind the wounded dogs, who eventually crossed with the Red Wolf. Catahoula means, beautiful clear water, in reference to their eyes. The Carpenters, of Ranch O Color, in Vermilion, Alberta, Canada are raising puppies, so more Canadians can share this experience.
